Ahead of the highly-anticipated Pigment & Colour Science Forum 2019, we spoke to confirmed speaker, Tom Mestdag, International Sales Manager EMEA Of The Shepherd Color Company.
Pigments providing additional functionality is a hot topic in industry at the moment–how will your presentation help the audience to gain insight into what is possible in this area?
Innovation is key for future success. Adding functionality to our pigments such as IR reflective properties adds an extra dimension to our already durable products. These innovations are a perfect way to remain a step ahead of your competitors.
What do you think needs to be done to increase sustainability of pigments and the pigments industry?
Many pigments are currently manufactured in the Far East where the awareness of sustainability and Circular Economy (Re-work, Re-use, Re-cycle) is very limited. Overall impact on the environment and on workers is less of a topic. Companies that want to be sustainable should realize that starting with the selection of the right sustainable suppliers will make a greater environmental impact. At Shepherd Color, we have been implementing various forms of sustainable practices for decades. We take sustainability very serious and take this into consideration when selecting our own suppliers.
What are the biggest challenges facing the industry right now and how to do you think this conference can address them?
Uncertainty of supply of some pigments. A good example is Pigment Yellow 74 which is currently causing severe headaches. A good understanding of the pigment industry and alternatives, even if these may be a little more expensive, may actually help to avoid the current painful situation.
What do you see as the most significant changes coming up in the pigment sector in the next 12-24 months?
Within the pigment world, economies of scale also apply, resulting in the consolidation of the industry. A few very large pigment companies are known to be for sale. This may seriously impact the future outlook of the industry. Specializing in CICPs for over 80 years and continuing to add functionality to our already innovative products, The Shepherd Color Company will continue to be a unique partner in the future.
What are you most looking for to about attending the Pigment and Colour Science Forum 2019?
I am looking forward to meeting with users of pigments to better understand what their current and future needs are to prepare for a bright outlook.
