Ahead of the highly-anticipated TiO2 World Summit 2019, we spoke to confirmed speaker, Dr. Karin Tynelius, Expert Advisor for Mineral Markets.
You are going to be speaking on the influence of the product suite on the value of a feedstock project– why is this significant to the audience?
Many ore deposits, or mine projects, are characterized by their total resources or reserves and the content of valuable minerals, the “% HM content”. In reality, these “valuable minerals” are 3 major product groups: ilmenite, rutile and zircon, which don’t have the same sales price. I will show how the value of the project strongly depends on the ratio of these 3 products, as this will define your yearly revenues.
What are the biggest challenges facing the industry right now and how to do you think this conference can address them?
The TiO2 industry must, like any other industry, respond to the energetic transition and public and political demand to reduce packaging. This will inevitably create both opportunities and disruptions and change the way companies act and interact. The extractive industry must in addition meet criteria on ESG issues that are quite specific, especially in developing countries. The TiO2 Summit, being a unique meeting place where upstream producers and downstream end-users converge, offers a fantastic opportunity to expose future product requirements so that suppliers and customers can advance together towards solutions.
What do you see as the most significant changes coming up in the TiO2 sector in the next 12-24 months?
I believe the short or medium term will see some further consolidation or vertical integration, and it will be very interesting to see how many Chinese companies will enter the chloride pigment segment.
What are you most looking for to about attending the TiO2 World Summit 2019?
I am happy that some emerging producers will present their projects. I also look forward to hearing from pigment producers’ demand for feedstock traceability going forward, and the update on regulations.
