Pigments Market at a Crossroads

Featured as the keynote speaker at this year's co-located Pigment and Color Science Forum & TiO2 World Summit, Dr. Alexander Haunschild, Managing Director & Senior VP of Global Pigments at BASF Colors & Effects GmbH, will take the stage to identify strategies for overcoming shared industry challenges, and facilitate an open dialogue about the future direction of the global pigments market.

Ahead of his participation at this year's event, we reached out to Dr. Haunschild to learn a little more about the recent challenges within the pigments market, notable advancements in pigment technology, and what he looks forward to hearing at the Pigment and Color Science Forum & TiO2 World Summit in 2018.

Dr. Haunschild, there have been so many challenges to the pigments market in recent years. What are some key takeaways from your presentation?

Well, the title of my presentation is “Pigments Market At The Crossroads”. This is because even though differentiation through colors and new effects is getting ever more important, the pigments industry has become predominantly price-driven in recent years. Looking ahead, I am convinced that companies with a strong focus on reliable production, product safety and effective raw material sourcing strategies will play a vital role for the entire color industry.

What do you consider to be the greatest advancement in pigment technology at the moment?

I’d say smart coating systems are a hot topic in the industry that come right on top of the list, as well as easily dispersible pigments. I’ll briefly touch on both of these aspects during my presentation by sharing some insights into how we at Colors & Effects help boost autonomous driving. Also, you may have heard about our pioneering stir-in pigment eXpand!TM, which is the first result from our strategic partnership with Landa Labs.

What are you most looking forward to hearing about at the Pigments and Color Forum?

It may well be that my speech provokes one or the other person in the audience. I’ll do so on purpose, because I look forward to a controversial discussion with the many experts participating in the Forum.
